In Australia, opening a bank account is a rather straightforward procedure. Before travelling to Australia, you can create a bank account for up to 12 months. Moreover, you can open a bank account online or by going to a branch. The following documentation is required whether you create an account in person or online:
· Passport
· Your foreign photo driving licence
· A national identity card from your home country.
If you don’t have this, you’ll need to provide one form of primary non-photographic ID document such as
· Birth certificate
· Citizenship certificate from your home country
Plus, one of the following secondary ID documents:
· Recent utility bill
· Paper driving licence
· Current tenancy or lease agreement
· Notice from the Australian Taxation office.
· Medicare card
· Australian marriage certificate
· ID card from an Australian higher education institute.
If you open a bank account online, you must schedule a visit to your nearby branch to present the required paperwork. Bring the above-mentioned documents if you plan to create a bank account in person at the branch to get the account operational quickly. We advise you to open the bank account during the first six weeks of your arrival since you can then be asked for additional identification for verification.
